As a pediatrician working at the Pediatric Healthy Lifestyle Center (PHLC) at the Santa Clara county Health and Hospital System, I am currently on the “front lines” in the battle against childhood obesity. The PLMC specializes in working with obese and pre-diabetic kids to improve their lifestyle so that they can optimize their health. Here is an average Tuesday at the clinic.
What do all these kids have in common? It is a lack of physical activity. Even greater than the epidemic of obesity is the epidemic of sedentary behavior amongst our youth. The children most at risk are those who have the least resources. Traditional competitive sports are not a feasible option for them.
Non-profit organizations such as TurningWheels For Kids (TWFK), are vital in helping to combat the obesity epidemic in our community. By distributing bikes to underprivileged children, TWFK is providing access to an enjoyable form of exercise which in turn, is access to health. The importance of their work cannot be overstated. For some of my patients, TWFK is the only resource these families can turn to.
